Hero Objects: One Showpiece That Stops People Across the Hall

3 October 2026

At CES 2025, Ring built a larger-than-life version of its selfie camera, and it did more than sit there: it snapped and printed photos for visitors. Shokz and Xreal took the same route with oversized replicas of their headphones and glasses, and Event Marketer called the Xreal display hard to miss. None of them needed a paragraph of copy. The product, blown up, was the message.

Pick one thing and make it big

The discipline behind a hero object is restraint. Choose the product itself or a single symbol that stands for it, then scale it until it reads from the far end of an aisle. BMW pushed this furthest at CES 2025 with a “shrinking” experience: a larger-than-life steering wheel and dashboard, a giant pair of Wayfarer sunglasses and the top of a coffee cup in the cupholder, with seating for a little more than 100 people at a time. At CES 2026, Kodak showed the idea works on a modest footprint too, building its booth around a larger-than-life camera on a stand Event Marketer grouped among the smaller-scale exhibits.

Small-stand version: One oversized product replica on a plinth at the front corner beats three normal-sized products lined up on a shelf.

Stand it tall, or hang it

There are two ways to lift a hero object above the crowd. Floor-standing pieces can be dramatic: Bosch’s IFA 2024 stand used 3.5m-high cushions that arrived by special transport. Suspended pieces free up floor space and put the brand in clear air, as LG did at CES 2025 with a chandelier made from 28 transparent OLED TVs. Whatever the format, the object has to sit where eyes already go. Too low and it vanishes behind visitors’ heads; too high and it becomes part of the ceiling. Check the sightline from the nearest aisle junction before the drawing is signed off.

Small-stand version: Raise a smaller object on a column so its top clears head height, and keep the base free for conversations.

Read the manual before you fall in love

UK venue rules shape what is possible as much as budget does. At BOA Congress 2026 at Olympia London, the maximum build height was 3.5m from the hall floor, including branding and platforms, and nothing could protrude over gangways or neighbouring stands. At Crufts 2025 at the NEC, standfitting was capped at 4.0m and anything suspended from the roof was limited to sponsors and supporters. At ExCeL London, every fixing to the hall ceiling is made by the venue’s own rigging team, third-party rigging applications need at least 28 days’ notice before tenancy, and items hang at the organiser’s set height, or 8m to the top, unless agreed otherwise. Lifting points on ExCeL’s 2026 rate card cost £358 to £516 per week before the sign itself is made.

So a hanging sign means organiser approval, dimensioned plans with weights, and a rigging contractor. Work the timeline backwards from those deadlines, not forwards from the design.

Small-stand version: If rigging is ruled out, find the height limit in your exhibitor manual and design the hero object to reach it from the floor.

Light it like a stage

An oversized object under flat hall lighting looks like a prop waiting to be collected. Give it its own spotlights so it glows against the hall, and keep the rest of the stand quieter so nothing competes. Plan where the object sits relative to the stand’s open sides, so it reads from every approach rather than only head on.

Small-stand version: Two well aimed spotlights on one object will do more than a full lighting rig spread evenly across a small stand.
